Big Hero 6 was the first superhero movie in Disney’s animated feature film line. Released in 2014 and featuring Marvel comic characters, the movie met with critical and commercial success. It garnered over $650 million in revenue and won a number of notable Academy, BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for animated films.
Big Hero 6 follows the story of Hiro Hamada, a young boy living with his aunt and elder brother Tadashi in the fictional city of San Fransokyo. Hiro cultivates a strong passion for robotics and often participates in illegal robot fights. In an effort to channel his energies in the right direction, Tadashi takes Hiro to his university, where he meets Tadashi’s friends including Baymax, a robot created by Tadashi. Hiro decides to join the university and presents his self-created line of microbots at a science fair, which impresses Professor Callaghan, the head of the robotics department.
One day, a fire breaks out at the university and Tadashi rushes in to save Callaghan. Unfortunately, there is an explosion and both are assumed to have died. After mourning for some time, Hiro along with Baymax discover that someone has been producing his microbots in a warehouse, where he is also attacked by a masked assailant. After a narrow escape, Hiro equips Tadashi’s friends and Baymax with his specially created armor, forming a superhero gang to battle the mysterious creator of the microbots!
What follows is an extremely entertaining story. It turns out that Callaghan stole Hiro’s microbots to take revenge on one Alastair Krei, the owner of a robotics company who had previously offered to buy Hiro’s microbots. Some time ago, Callaghan’s daughter had been lost in a teleportation device being built by Krei. Callaghan now plans to attack a public event by Krei and destroy his headquarters. In the process, Hiro and his friends discover that Callaghan’s daughter is still alive but stuck permanently inside a pod in the teleport device. Baymax and Hiro enter the device to save Callaghan’s daughter and while they are successful, Baymax is left behind.
The story ends well – Callaghan’s daughter survives and Hiro discovers he has Baymax’s personality chip and reconstructs him from scratch. Together with Baymax, Hiro and his friends use robots for the betterment of mankind, which he believes would have made Tadashi very glad indeed!
Hiro and his lovable ensemble of friends made Big Hero 6 an instant hit with children worldwide, especially in Japan.
