Despite releasing in December 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of the greatest blockbuster of 2015. In less than three months since its release, The Force Awakens has become one of the highest revenue grossing movies ever, pushing the Star Wars into a league of its own as far as movie franchises are concerned. To date, the movie has grossed over $2 billion worldwide and picked up a handsome kitty of awards at various feature film events.
The Force Awakens picks up approximately three decades after the Second Death Star is destroyed and the disappearance of Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi. The Galactic Empire is ruined but the First Order continues its legacy and seeks to destroy Luke. Luke, in the meantime, has been in hiding. Distraught at one of his pupils turning to the dark side while he attempted to rebuild the First Order, Luke held himself responsible and sends himself into exile.
This part of the franchise features Leia Organa, Luke’s sister and leader of the Resistance. It also sees the return of old Star Wars favorites Hans Solo, Chewbacca, R2D2 and C3PO. A central feature of the movie is the fight between the Stormtroopers led by Kylo Ren, son of Hans Solo, and the Resistance, which includes a wide variety of characters. The First Order and the Stormtroopers are successful in destroying the remnants of the Galactic Empire with their planet-killer called Starkiller Base. They now turn their attention to the Resistance, whom they have tracked to a number of planets.
At the same time, the Resistance has its own plans to destroy Starkiller Base. Their plan hinges on gaining covert access to the planet and attacking it after lowering its defenses. In their efforts to do so, Hans encounters his son Ren and attempts to persuade him to return from the dark side. Ren kills his father but the Resistance is successful in destroying Starkiller Base. However, the Resistance still has no clue to Luke Skywalker’s location. At this crucial junction, R2D2 restarts and completes a map previously found by the Resistance! With this knowledge in hand, Chewbacca and Rey, a new joinee to the Resistance, find Luke and offer him his lightsaber back.
